Day 1                          Geikie Gorge Wildlife Cruise

 Fitzroy River Lodge (L)

Departing Broome this morning we travel through the remote and beautiful landscape of the Western Kimberley, learning of local history, people and the environment. Our drive takes us to the remote township of Fitzroy Crossing where after lunch we join a cruise through the majestic Geikie Gorge. Nature carved this wonder between the Geikie and Oscar Ranges during the Devonian period over 350 million years ago and we’ll learn of the fascinating geology of this natural wonder and discover the huge array of wildlife including freshwater crocodiles, birds and fish. We visit the picturesque old Fitzroy River ford prior to checking into our comfortable accommodation for the evening.

Day 2                          Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge, Gibb River Road

Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge (B,L,D)

We join the Fairfield Leopold Road tracking through a stunning landscape of boab trees and limestone escarpments arriving at Tunnel Creek, a 750- metre cave system carved through the Napier Range, in which we discover stalactites, secret caves and a variety of wildlife. It is here we also hear of the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide out in the late 1800's. Our journey continues to the stunning natural beauty of Windjana Gorge with spectacular cliffs and an opportunity to get up close (but not too close!) with the endemic freshwater crocodile. After a picnic lunch inside the gorge we hit the Gibb River Road, the legendary track completed in the 1960’s to expedite the movement of cattle from remote pastoral leases. Today it’s been upgraded and maintained by main roads however still presents a challenge to the intrepid traveller and is closed by the numerous water crossings during much of the seasonal wet. Along the Gibb we traverse through the scenic King Leopold Ranges arriving at Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge to relax in beautiful surroundings prior to a delicious dinner.

Day 3                          Bell Gorge, Galvin’s Gorge

 Mt Barnett Roadhouse (B,L,D)

This morning we venture to stunning Bell Gorge, featuring a cascading waterfall, it is truly a breathtaking sight involving a short, but rocky walk rewarded with a deep swimming hole at the base. Surrounded by shady ledges and high cliffs we have sample time to explore the spectacular scenery, bird watch and swim. Along the Gibb River Road we continue east over the Philips Range for our lunch stop at the iconic Barnett River outback roadhouse, home of the best burger on the Gibb. After lunch it’s time to relax and swim at beautiful Galvin’s Gorge, our favourite small gorge in the Kimberley made even more special by the boab sentry and Wandjina rock paintings, we may even spot the resident water monitors basking in the sun. As the afternoon shadows lengthen we make our way through cattle country to our evening accommodation. (Mt Barnett: Shared Facilities)

Day 4                          Mowanjam Aboriginal Art
Centre, Boab Prison Tree   Concludes Broome (B,L)

This morning we continue through spectacular landscapes visiting Mowanjam Aboriginal Art & Cultural Centre for an insight into the local community of Indigenous artists and learn the story of the local aboriginal spirit, the Wandjina, known by many for it’s spectacular appearance at the Sydney Olympics. We tour historic Derby, sight of some of the highest tidal movements in the world, where we will enjoy lunch down by the wharf. Our next stop is the famous Boab Prison Tree, believed to be more than 1,500 years old and measuring an incredible 14 metres in diameter, this remarkable tree was once used by early police patrols as a standing point for prisoners as they were walked to Derby. This afternoon we make our way back crossing the Fitzroy River with a return to Broome late in the afternoon.
